Save the Salt Coalition

Registered as a National Landmark, the Bonneville Salt Flats is a national treasure which has gained international significance as an awe inspiring geologic phenomenon – a place so flat you can see the curvature of the planet.  For motor sports enthusiasts world-wide, of which there are millions, it is much more.  It is hallowed ground.  From the first speed record attempts in 1914 and through the present day, hundreds of records have been set and broken in a variety of automotive and motorcycle classes.

The Salt Flats is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated an “area of critical environmental concern.”  For over six decades, the land has been managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM).

The racing community has partnered with the mine owner to restore salt to the BSF.  However, this partnership does not make up for five decades of BLM inaction.

We believe that the BLM must be forced to restore the Salt Flats to its previous natural state.  To ensure success, the racing performance industry and land speed enthusiasts must also join in the effort to return more salt to the Salt Flats. 

We need your help.  We are raising funds to restore the Salt Flats.  Any money contributed to this cause will be used to return salt to its home.  This process will require equipment and resources to transport salt from the mining area.  It will include a supplemental program to pump and spread salt brine from collection areas.  We will pursue other initiatives as well to bring salt back to Bonneville.
